What Is the Roy Hart Method?
The human voice is much more than an instrument for producing sound. It is a means of expression, communication and presence.
Through the voice, we can reveal different states, emotions, intentions and aspects of who we are.
The work of Roy Hart explores this territory: the voice as an integrated experience of body, imagination, emotion and expression.
But what exactly is Roy Hart work, and what makes it different from conventional vocal training?

Where does Roy Hart work come from?
The work has its roots in the research of Alfred Wolfsohn, a German voice teacher who developed an innovative approach to the human voice during the 20th century.
Wolfsohn was interested in exploring the voice beyond the limits normally imposed by conventional singing. Rather than working only within an established vocal range or a particular aesthetic, he explored the full spectrum of the human voice — from very low to very high sounds, from speech to singing, and from delicate sounds to powerful expression.
Roy Hart became one of Wolfsohn's students and continued this research, developing it through his own artistic and pedagogical work.
This work eventually led to the creation of the Roy Hart Theatre, which became internationally known for its exploration of the relationship between voice, theatre and human expression.
Today, this legacy continues at the Roy Hart Voice Centre in Malérargues, France. The Centre describes the work as a continuing exploration of the human voice and its relationship with the individual, without a single prescribed curriculum.

A voice beyond technique
Traditional vocal training often focuses on elements such as breathing, support, resonance, pitch, vocal placement and tone.
These elements can be important, but Roy Hart work approaches the voice from a broader perspective.
The question is not only:
“How can I produce this sound?”
but also:
“What can my voice express?”
Vocal exploration can include sounds that are very different from those we normally use in everyday life: low and high sounds, speaking and singing, roughness and softness, strength and fragility, rhythm and silence.
The aim is not to produce unusual sounds simply for their own sake.
It is to discover possibilities that may already exist within the voice and, through exploration, develop greater freedom and expressive choice.
The relationship between voice and body
The voice does not exist separately from the body.
Every sound involves breathing, movement, muscular coordination, tension and release, posture and physical awareness.
For this reason, Roy Hart work often connects vocal exploration with movement and the body.
A simple change in posture, movement or physical intention can transform the quality of a sound.
By becoming more aware of the body, we can begin to understand how deeply it participates in the production and expression of the voice.
This is why voice work is not simply about the vocal mechanism. It is also about listening, sensation, movement and presence.

Voice, emotion and imagination
The voice is deeply connected to our emotional experience.
When we speak or sing, we communicate through much more than words. Rhythm, tone, intensity, breath and energy all contribute to what we communicate.
In Roy Hart work, emotion does not have to be artificially added in order to make the voice expressive.
Through vocal and physical exploration, we create conditions in which different expressive qualities can emerge.
Imagination also plays an important role.
An image, a character, a situation or an intention can change the way we use the voice. A different image can produce a different physical state, which can in turn produce a different sound.
The work therefore becomes simultaneously vocal, physical, artistic and personal.
Do you need to know how to sing?
No.
Roy Hart work is not reserved for professional singers and does not require previous experience.
It can be explored by singers, actors, performers, teachers, speakers or anyone interested in developing a more conscious relationship with their voice.
You do not need to have a “good voice”.
In fact, the work invites us to question what we mean by a good voice in the first place.
Rather than trying to make every voice fit a particular model, the exploration is about discovering what is unique to each person.
What can this work offer?
Each person may discover something different.
For some, the work may involve exploring vocal range, resonance and variety. For others, it may open possibilities around confidence, presence and expression.
It can be relevant to artistic practice, actor and singer training, performance, public speaking or simply to anyone who wants to explore their voice more freely.
At the heart of the work is a process of exploration.
Rather than learning a fixed set of exercises or trying to achieve an “ideal voice”, we investigate how the voice can become more available, responsive and expressive.
My approach to Roy Hart work
As a Roy Hart Voice Center Teacher, I integrate this approach into my wider vocal practice.
My work combines the exploration of voice, body and expression with more than 25 years of experience in vocal teaching and coaching.
Each person brings a different voice, body, experience and set of intentions. For this reason, I do not follow exactly the same process with everyone.
The exploration may begin with movement, breathing, sound, speech, singing, improvisation or simply listening.
The aim is to create a space where it is possible to experiment without judgement and discover new possibilities.
The voice does not always need to be pushed in order to become more powerful.
Sometimes, it simply needs more space.

Discovering your own voice
Exploring the voice through Roy Hart work can become a journey of discovery.
It takes us beyond the idea that the voice exists simply to sing in tune or speak correctly.
The voice can be deep or high, delicate or powerful, clear or rough, quiet or expansive.
It can tell a story, create a character, communicate an idea or simply reveal a presence.
The work begins when we stop trying to find the “right” voice and start discovering our own.
